Great Book! I was unable to put the book down. I felt like I was right there with him the whole time from leaving FDNY to his move into the farmhouse. As you read the book you always wanted to know what he was going to do next. From the fire training burn at the shed, to the accident to the church fire, you were never really sure who was on his side or not. THE MOST Realistic BOOK I HAVE READ IN A WHILE.
Brian Hockenberry, Firefighter

Smoke has woven together the camaraderie, operational successes and failures, and political experiences of those in Emergency Services into a ‘you can’t put it down story’. Readers experience the dedication and humanity of the people who take the risk of helping others; for me, it also brought to mind our unit’s calls, team members, and those we served.

Bravo!  I just finished your novel.  You have a direct hit on the heart and soul of first responders. You have captured the personal inter-relations of emergency services that very few have the honor to experience. On every page I could relate to a similar incident over my 31 years, from the practical jokes, rites of passage and politics. Well Done.
John A. Hale, Battalion Chief, San Diego Fire-Rescue, Station10

The characters in the book bring back memories of service to a volunteer fire department.  These are a special breed of first responders from all walks of life and backgrounds. Interrupted dinners, training nights and human frailties are all brought to life in this well written, action packed book. I highly recommend this as a must read.
Walter Kennedy, Former Volunteer Firefighter

The plot kept you in the book the whole time. The descriptions of the fire calls and emergency response made me feel as though I was part of the action. The ending was very emotional and well written. I felt the hero, Charles Sinclair, handled the racial issues very well by just trying to be a good fireman.

I'm a volunteer fireman in southwest Colorado, I bought this book on the advice of a buddy and I have to say it was one of the best books I have read this year. It grabs you right from the beginning and does stop the roller coaster ride; you feel like you on scene with the Nettles Fire Department. This book has it all; and for a fire buff, career fireman, volunteer fireman or any other first responder it is a must read!
G. McNeil, Volunteer Fireman

Your book was a delight to read. I am the mother of a volunteer firefighter and appreciated the explanations regarding the science of fire. The "training sessions" helped this Mom to lay down some anxiety.
Your character development was terrific. I could "feel" the relationship between Sinclair and Josie healing on the pages.  Personally, I would enjoy having Josie as a friend.
Sinclair, O'Grady , Hightower, Franken...... they're all guys I have met at the firehouse. The story line was great. I can see this book as a movie. Your sense of humor is reflected so much so that I can see Franken painting his "Arse" green and mooning the County board. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next book.

I just recently read your book and I have to say it was one of the best books that I have read this year. I'm really glad that someone finally wrote a book about the unsung heros; the volunteer fireman and EMT's. If you were curious yes I'am a volunteer here in Colorado, and right now I'm working on becoming a paramedic. Thank you again for writing such an awesome book. Just in case your interested, I write screenplays in my spare time; and if you wanted I would be willing to convert the book into a screenplay. Thank you again.

My son first bought this book from a book store, and then my wife and I started to read it. I ordered my wife a copy from your website. Thanks for the autographed copy. My son and I are volunteer firefighters and this book really touches on issues and terminology we use in the fire service, so we can relate to the storyline. My wife is an Auxiliary member, but she is not familiar with what it is actually like to go out on a fire call, only from hearing us talk about it. This story uses terms that she hears from us and she can relate those to the storyline, so I think that is what interested her in the book. Thanks for writing a book my whole family can enjoy and relate to.
